Scream franchise is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary since the release of the first film in 1996.
Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have given fans no better way to celebrate than by releasing the trailer for the fifth film attached to the franchise Scream.
The film’s release will be in January 2022 but the terrifying and iconic ‘Ghostface’ has most definitely returned to our screens in the new shocking and frightening trailer.
The last film, Scream 4, was released in 2011 and was the last film to be produced with its original creator Wes Craven due to his death in 2015.
The franchise has returned with original screen-writer Kevin Williamson as the producer along with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
Busick worked with the film’s new team of directors, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet, on the 2019 Horror-comedy film Ready or Not.
Not only have Paramount released its new Scream trailer, but they have also produced a new poster to mark the trailer’s release.
The poster has come with the conniving tagline “It’s always someone you know” allowing fans to speculate on who will be the new ‘Ghostface’.
What has the Scream 5 trailer revealed?
The new trailer confirms that the new movie will see another killer (or killers) put on the historic and alarming mask in order to resurrect secrets from Woodsboro’s past.
Viewers see Dewey (David Arquette) call Sidney (Neve Campbell) in order to bring her back to Woodsboro when a new series of murders starts. The two then team up again with Gale (Courteney Cox) to take down the new killer.
The ending of the trailer has Sidney face to face with the killer as he tells her “Hello Sidney, it’s an honour.”
In this first trailer, the franchise seems stuck between a sequel to Scream 4 and a reboot of the original 1996 film. These two positions fit perfectly for the film as it feels as if it is exactly where it needs to be for a fifth film.
Earlier this year, Courteney Cox spoke to DigitalSpy claiming that while Scream 5 does follow the events of the 2011 hit, the new 2022 film will definitely not be a direct sequel to it.
“These directors are just incredible. It’s hip, it’s scary, it’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s going to be fantastic.”
When is Scream 5 released in UK?
The franchise has announced that Scream 5 will be released in UK cinemas on 14 January 2022.
Who is the cast of Scream 5?
Neve Campbell will be returning to her role as Sidney Prescott alongside David Arquette as Dewey Riley and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers.
In the Spring on 2020, the directing pair did not have any explicit certainty that the trio of Campbell, Arquette and Cox would reprise their roles for a fifth time. The absence of one of more of the main characters would definitely be questioned by ardent fans of the franchise.
Additionally, their characters Sidney, Gale and Dewey were all prominent features in the original script for the 2022 film.
Director Gillet spoke to Entertainment Weekly saying “They were not disposable roles; they were very, very important and the heartbeat of what was great about the script. We couldn’t imagine the movie without any of them and so not having that perfectly locked-in off the bat was definitely scary.”
Who is in the Scream 5 cast?
Campbell, Arquette and Cox will be joined by a new young cast including Melissa Berrera (In the heights), Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games), Kyle Gallner (Dear White People), Jenna Ortega (Iron Man 3), Mason Gooding (Booksmart), Mikey Madison (Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood) and Dylan Minnette (Prisoners).
