Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has released its first teaser trailer, providing the first glimpse of its star studded cast.
Like the original HBO TV smash hit, the series is based on George R.R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series and its companion materials.
House of the Dragon will be set primarily in Westeros and focusing on the Targaryen’s reign of power.

What happens in the House of the Dragon trailer?
The fist teaser trailer for the new House of the Dragon gave fans their first proper insight into the new cast of the big budget fantasy drama.
The trailer revealed several characters who will feature in the show, including; Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), and the return of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). Viserys I is the fifth king of the Targaryen dynasty.
The trailer also reveals Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), Corlys Valaryon (Steve Toussaint), Mysaria (Sonoyo Mizuno), and Ser Otto Hightower (Olivia Cooke).
The trailer doesn’t reveal anything about the plot, but those who are aware of the story already will be able to pick out key moments from the teaser.
The only lines spoken in the trailer are: “Gods, Kings, Fire, and Blood. Dreams didn’t make us kings, Dragons did.” They appear to have been spoken by Matt Smith’s character.
What is House of the Dragon about?
House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones TV series.
The show follows a turbulent period for House Targaryen, which sees siblings and dragons battle against each other over who should rule on the Iron Throne.
In a blog post teasing the show, George R.R Martin said: “If you’d like to know a bit more of what the show will be about… well, I can’t actually spill those beans. But you might want to pick up a copy of two anthologies I did with Gardner Dozois, Dangerous Women and Rogues, and then move on to Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood.”
Dangerous Women includes a 35,000-word novella written by Martin called ‘The Princess and the Queen, or, the Blacks and the Greens’. The story focuses and the civil war that caused a huge divide in Westeros and lasted nearly two centuries.
Rogues includes Martin’s tale ‘The Rogue Prince, or, a King’s Brother,’ which tells the story of Prince Daemon Targaryen, considered “one of the biggest rogues in the entire history of Ice and Fire.”
Finally, the novel Fire & Blood is the first novel covering a two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
Who’s in the cast of House of the Dragon?
The trailer has confirmed that several GOT actors will return.
House Targaryen members are said to include Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes, Hot Fuzz) as King Viserys Targaryen and Matt Smith (The Crown) as his younger brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Emma D’Arcy (Truthseekers, Wanderlust) will star as Viserys’ daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Cooke (Sound of Metal) and Rhys Ifans (Nottinghill) will play daughter-father duo Alicent Hightower and Otto Hightower.
Sonoya Mizuno (Crazy Rich Asians) will star as Mysaria, the family’s unlikely ally.
Toussaint (Flight of Fury) is expected to play the role of Lord Corlys Velaryon alongside Eve Best (The Homecoming) as his wife, Princess Rhaenys Velaryon.
When is House of the Dragon coming out?
The new HBO series is set to arrive in 2022.
The show doesn’t have a more specific release date yet. It will be available on HBO Max in the US, and in the UK on Sky and NOW.
