The Last Kingdom is a Netflix drama which has been on our screens since 2015.
Season 5 of the hit show, based on the book series The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, premiered on 5 March - and fans are crying out for more.
Here’s all you need to know about what happens to The Last Kingdom tribe after season 5.
Will there be a season 6 of The Last Kingdom?
There will not be a season 6 of The Last Kingdom, it has been confirmed.
Fans can expect to see a final film instead of another season of The Last Kingdom.
The film, Seven Kings Must Die, has been described as a “standalone” epilogue to the programme.
Netflix has announced that it has commissioned a two hour film to act as the sequel to the beloved fantasy drama.
What will Seven Kings Must Die be about?
Nigel Merchant, executive producer, has said that the story for the film will be inspired by the final three books of the Bernard Cornwell series.
Fans are yet to see War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings and War Lord brought to life, but it is hoped the film will cover the last three books.
Filming for Seven Kings Must Die began in January 2022 with actor Alexander Dreymon announcing the filming on his Instagram.
Has Seven Kings Must Die production finished?
The film is yet to have a confirmed release date but cast and crew wrapped on production on 21 March 2022.
Dreymon, who portrays Uhtred in the series, again took to Instagram to tell fans that the production had wrapped.
The actor told his fans on social media: “I feel so lucky that I got to live part time in Uhtred’s skin for so many years.”
Why will season 5 of The Last Kingdom be its last?
The decision for season 5 to be the last of the show actually dates back to the very early days of development.
When the first season premiered, author Bernard Cornwell was still writing the final book of his series, but this gave producers the story arc in which to follow.
The creative team behind The Last Kingdom had intended for the series to naturally end with the books.
Merchant has said that this was a “joint decision” between Carnival, the production company and Netflix.
The executive producer told The Radio Times that he felt the ending of the programme came at the “right time”.
Although it is uncertain as to who will be returning for the film, actor Dreymon has been sharing film updates on his Instagram.
During these updates fans have been given a sneak peek as to who we might expect to see on our screens.
Popping into Dreymon’s filming announcement was Arnas Fedaraviciu,s who plays Sihtric, confirming that the loyal ally will be returning.
With the production finally wrapped, we can only hope to see the return of our favourite characters soon.
