‘I’m never giving up on him’
As Britain’s worst affected coronavirus survivor, Derek, 54, has spent months in hospital and still requires round the clock care.
He was admitted to hospital in March 2020 after contracting the virus and was then placed in a medically induced coma to allow his body time to recover.
He did not wake up until several months later, after which the virus had “devastated” his body, causing damage to his liver, digestive system, heart and nervous system.
Kate explained: “We’re pretty sure the inflammation did pass through the brain.
“He still can’t communicate. Fundamentally he’s in a terrible state.”
Derek was released from hospital in April and was allowed to continue his recovery from home, alongside Kate and their two children Billy, 11 and Darcey, 15.
However, he is still unable to wash or feed himself and must eat with the aid of a feeding tube, and he has medical staff looking after him on shifts to ensure he always has someone by his side.
Kate said she sits by his side all night as he is only awake for around 28 hours a week, so she wants to make sure he can “feel her presence”.
Despite the struggles, Kate praised her husband for fighting “so hard to stay in this world” and pledged to never give up on him.
She said: “He will turn to me and say “I love you”.
“He is there, he has fought so hard to stay in this world and I’m not giving up on him, ever.
When will Kate appear on Life Stories?
Piers Morgan’s Life Stories with Kate Garraway will air on ITV on Sunday 5 December at 8pm.
As well as discussing the latest on her husband’s Covid recovery, Piers also looks back on the most memorable moments from Kate’s 23 years on breakfast TV, including the day she slept through six alarm calls, to her unique role in the coverage of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
When will she take over as host?
Sunday’s show will mark Piers Morgan’s final time in the interview seat, as Kate prepares to officially replace him as presenter of the series for three upcoming instalments.
The three new episodes will be broadcast in the new year.
