Scotsman Archive: Savings campaign, 1 February, 1940
"The National Savings movement is called upon to turn its organisation into a piece of war machinery as a help in providing the financial support to defend ourselves against a ruthless aggressor."
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has said that "finance is the fourth arm of our defence" and "if finance fails, then the prop that sustains the whole of our war efforts will collapse". The Chancellor has told us that his endeavour is to provide for it in such a way that the burden will be divided between the present and future generations. He was glad to say the workers in the National Savings movement in Scotland were responding to this appeal in a way which augured well for its complete success.
