Supermarket New Year’s opening hours: when Morrisons, Asda, Aldi and more are open on New Year’s Day

It can be difficult to keep up with the New Year’s opening hours for supermarkets, as some will be closed and others won’t

Over the Christmas and New Year period, it’s normal for shops and supermarkets to alter their opening and closing hours - and there’s nothing worse than thinking you can quickly nip to the shops when you’ve forgotten something important, only to discover that its closed.

With Christmas now behind us for another year, this is everything you need to know about the operating hours of the major supermarkets across the UK on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, so you don’t get caught out.

Morrisons

On the Morrisons website, it lists the following as the opening hours for the majority of its stores:

  • Thursday 30 December:  7am - 10pm
  • Friday 31 December: 7am - 6pm
  • Saturday 1 January: 9am - 6pm
  • Sunday 2 January: 10am - 4pm

Aldi

Aldi has announced that its opening hours are:

  • Thursday 30 December: 8am - 9pm
  • Friday 31 December: 8am - 6pm
  • Saturday 1 January: Closed
  • Sunday 2 January: 9:30am - 4pm
  • Monday 3 January: 8am - 9pm

There are a few differences for the opening times for Scottish stores - on Sunday 2 and Monday 3 of January, Scottish stores will be open from 8am - 10pm.

Tesco

Tesco will also be operating under slightly different opening hours across the festive season:

  • Friday 31 December: 6am - 7pm 
  • Saturday 1 January: Closed
  • Sunday 2 January: 9am - 6pm
  • Monday 3 January: 8am - 6pm

Lidl

These are the Lidl seasonal opening hours:

  • Thursday 30 December: 8am - 10pm
  • Friday 31 December: 8am - 7pm
  • Saturday 1 January: Closed
  • Sunday 2 January: 8am - 10pm
  • Monday 3 January: 8am - 10pm

Waitrose

The Waitrose website states that customers are advised to check the times of their local store for its seasonal opening hours. You can do this by using the branch finder tool on the Waitrose website.

Waitrose says: “On New Year’s Day, our shops will be closed, with the exception of a small number which will have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm.”

Iceland

These are the Iceland seasonal opening hours as listed on its website:

  • Thursday 30 December: 8am - 7pm
  • Friday 31 December: 9am - 5pm
  • Saturday 1 January: Closed
  • Sunday 2 January: 10am - 4pm
  • Monday 3 January: 8am - 7pm

Marks and Spencer
