Body pulled from Scapa Flow may be missing diver

THE body of a diver recovered from a wreck in Scapa Flow in Orkney may be that of a man missing for more than two years.

Northern Constabulary said the remains were found on Monday. A post-mortem examination will take place in Inverness and a report will be sent to the procurator-fiscal in Kirkwall.

The force has not yet identified the man, but it is understood to be investigating whether the body is that of Martin Voordouw, 40, from the Netherlands, who was reported missing on 23 October, 2007 while diving near Cava Island, west of Scapa Flow.

Mr Voordouw failed to return to his dive boat, the Jean Elaine, although his diving buddy reappeared. It is thought he was exploring one of the vessels in the German Grand Fleet, which was scuttled at Scapa Flow in 1919.

A search at the time involved two lifeboats from Stromness and Longhope, and a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth.

Divers from Grampian Police also scoured Scapa Flow and a remotely operated vehicle was used to search the vessel that Mr Voordouw was thought to have been exploring.
