Centre 1 chief owed £75k tax

A £70,000-A-YEAR tax boss was made bankrupt just weeks before he landed a job running a HM Revenue & Customs call centre.

John Robert Bowering, 46, from Livingston, West Lothian, was sequestrated over debts of 75,545 owed to HMRC last March.

Last night an HMRC spokesman at Centre I in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, said it was aware of Mr Bowering's financial status when he was employed last June.

He said: "We require applicants to inform us if they are insolvent and we make a decision based on the job, risks posed and our ability to manage those risks."

Mr Bowering was reported to have gone off sick.
