Cheapside Street memorial held

NINETEEN men killed in a major warehouse fire more than 50 years ago were remembered at a ceremony yesterday.

A sudden explosion killed 14 firefighters and five salvage corps members tackling a blaze at the Arbuckle, Smith and Co whisky bond in Glasgow on 28 March, 1960.

The incident became known as the Cheapside Street disaster and remains the worst peacetime tragedy in the history of the UK fire service.

A memorial service was held at the Necropolis, overlooking Glasgow Cathedral. It was addressed by chief fire officer Brian Sweeney.
