A man has appeared in court charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice after the death of Hamilton teen Amber Gibson.

Stephen Corrigan, 43, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Last month Connor Gibson, 19, the brother of Amber, was charged with her murder and sexual assault and appeared in court.

Amber left her home Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, at around 9.15pm on 26 November and was reported missing later that night when she did not return.

Her body was discovered in Cadzow Glen park on Sunday 28 November. So what do we know so far?

What happened during the latest court appearance?

Stephen Corrigan, of Blantyre, was charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice. He made no plea when he appeared in private at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

The case was committed for further examination with Corrigan remanded in custody.

He is expected to appear in court again within the next week.

What happened during the court appearance last month?

Connor Gibson, whose general address was given in court as Hamilton, appeared in private on 3 December at Hamilton Sheriff Court in relation to the matter.

He was charged with sexual assault and murder, as well as attempting to pervert the course of justice.

During the hearing Gibson made no plea and the case against him was committed for further examination and he was remanded in custody.

Gibson appeared in court for a second time on Friday (10 December) where the case against him was fully committed for trial. No further dates have been set for future appearances.

Where was Amber last seen?

Amber, who also used the surname Niven, had been reported missing on Friday, 26 November.

She was known to have left her home in the Hillhouse area at around 9.15pm that night.

She was last seen in Cadzow Street around 9.55pm, before her body was discovered in the park around 10.10am on Sunday, 28 November.

The gates to the park and part of Cadzow Street were cordoned off as officers carried out investigations.

Who was Amber Gibson?

The teenager was a pupil at Moore House Academy in Bathgate, West Lothian, which is privately run and cares for children aged 11 to 18 who have faced social and educational challenges.

A spokesperson from Moore House said: “Amber was a well-loved, bright and lively young girl who attended our academy in Bathgate as a day pupil.

“Our children and staff are devastated at the news of this tragedy, and we are all supporting each other through this difficult time.

“Our deepest sympathies extend to Amber’s loved ones and to everyone who knew her.”

Speaking on after Amber’s death Detective Superintendent Raymond Brown, from Police Scotland Major Investigations Team West, said: “Her family and loved ones are understandably devastated by this untimely loss, Amber was a 16-year-old girl with her future in front of her.”
