But, why is November’s full moon called the Beaver Moon and when can you see it in the UK?

Why is it called a Beaver Moon?

The clue is in the name… The Beaver Moon is called after beavers as they typically start building their winter dams in November.

The full moon appears at the time when beavers are actively preparing for winter.

Another interpretation is that November was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs.

The full moon falling at a time when winter frosts historically began has caused this moon to also be known as the Frost Moon.

The November full moon is at the beginning of the winter season when temperatures begin to drop and frost begins to settle.

When can I see it in the UK?

The Beaver Moon will be visible on Friday 19 November and it will peak at around 8:57am, according to The Royal Observatory forecasts.

Getting away from polluted and cloudy skies will give you the best views of the full moon - and will make for a spectacular sight.

The best view of the full moon is when it is highest in the sky.

What is the zodiac sign of the November full moon?

Each year the full moons are believed to take on the character of the zodiac sign they fall in.

The Beaver Moon occurs in the zodiac sign of Taurus, which is associated with dependability and stubbornness.

What is a partial lunar eclipse?

The Beaver Moon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse, also known as a Half Blood Moon.

A lunar eclipse is when the earth, moon, and sun all line up, and the earth’s shadow projects onto the moon.

This shadow causes the moon to look red.

It won’t be a total lunar eclipse, but 98% of the moon will be covered up, so it is very close.

When is the next full moon?

The last full moon of 2021 will appear on 19 December and is known as the Cold Moon.

The name comes from the long, dark nights as winter takes its hold.

Falling in the festive season it is also referred to as the Moon before Yule and Long Nights Moon.
