Fine and ban for high-speed chase gardener

A DRIVER who led police on an 80mph chase has been fined and disqualified from driving.

Police activated their blue flashing lights when they spotted how Martin Grieve's car was being driven outside a pub in Penicuik, and he then drove off at speed.

In the chase that followed, speeds of up to 80mph were reached before Grieve lost control on a bend and mounted a verge.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday the 31-year old, of Carlops Road, Penicuk, was fined 300, disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to sit the extended driving test.

He pled guilty to driving dangerously on 2 August last year.

Fiscal Depute Neil Allan said that Grieve's Vauxhall Astra reached speeds of up to 80mph on the A702 as he overtook another car on a blind bend.

Defence agent Elspeth McDougall said her client had "panicked" when he had seen that a police vehicle was following him.
