The 63-year-old was found seriously injured in his flat in Laggan Road, Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, on Friday evening.
He was taken to Monklands General Hospital in Coatbridge, where he died of his injuries. His relatives have been informed.
Strathclyde Police, which is investigating the death, launched a murder inquiry and have been carrying out door-to-door inquiries.
Detective Inspector Duncan Hamilton, who is leading the inquiry, said: "I would once again urge anyone who may have seen or heard a disturbance in Laggan Road between these times to get in touch with police as a matter of urgency.
"We are confident that the answer lies within the community and would ask anyone with any information at all to please get in touch - no matter how insignificant it may seem, the information you have could be vital to the inquiry and tracing the person or people responsible for the death of this man."
A report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.
