Coloured view

May I assure John Munro (Letters, 28 March) that I do not think green belts are solely about nature conservation, as he claims. Green belts have a long and interesting history, and even a cursory glance at the literature shows different areas in the United Kingdom have developed in different ways both with and without green belt.

However, he and I would seem to be at variance on where development is most needed currently in Edinburgh. My recent contribution to the debate (Platform, 26 March) centred on the large increase in the number of single-person households, and the accommodation needs of people priced out of the city; his concern seems more about the provision of larger family homes.

Perhaps that colours both our thinking?
