History lesson

I HAVE never read such a fatuous statement as that by Gerry Hassan that “Scotland’s future is not about what happened in the past” (Perspective, 31 December).

We Scots are all here because of what happened in the past. Are, for example, the Act of Union 1707, the voter reform acts of the 19th and 20th centuries, new inventions (railways, radio, television etc) or the two world wars of complete irrelevance to Scots present and future?

Individuals, societies and nations are all the product of what happened in the past . If Mr Hassan cannot understand this, may I suggest that he begin by visiting to the Scottish War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.
