Nuclear question

Even though Iran, as a signatory of the existing international non-proliferation treaty, is entitled to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, the United Nations Security Council thinks otherwise (your report, 9 February).

Surely, the job of the Security Council is to uphold international treaties, not to abrogate them. A Security Council exercising such sweeping powers is, of course, a two-edged sword. What is to stop it from demanding that Israel surrenders its 200-odd atomic devices to achieve a nuclear-free Middle East?
