Scepticism and cynicism over Labour plans to tackle drinking and freeze wages, but the strange fish was a hit

LABOUR plans to crackdown on problem drinking with its 'Challenge 25' strategy proved unpalatable to most posters

Underagers will always be able to get their hands on drink from somewhere. It will never stop!

This has been going on for years but does nothing to address the problem of fake id and kids getting others to buy alcohol for them.

Another gimmick from the Labour Party. The legal age for alcohol is 18 so only query those of that age, not older.

They should start micro-chipping new-born children, possibly backed up with a barcode tattoo.

In the US, I was asked to show ID before I was allowed to buy alcohol. I'm almost 60 years old! But if it helps cut down the sale of alcohol to minors, then fair enough. But pubs/shops still don't see the main point – they are under no obligation to sell anything to anyone – it's pure greed that makes them sell booze to youngsters.

Grumpy,

A great idea. Tell staff to challenge someone for ID if you think they look under 25. What if you DON'T think they look under 25? Do the staff get punished? How can you enforce this? It is a nonsense. It's a crass attempt at vote grabbing.

And talking of drinking like a fish . . . strange one turned up on the shores of the Forth

Don't tell me. . . It is usually found in continental waters, so this must prove that the temperatures are rising . . . Blah Blah Blah Global Warming. Blah Blah Blah, higher taxes on motorists

Fish stories can prove irresistible to the punsters . . . this one is no exception

I've haddock enough of all these fishy puns in this plaice. Good cod, I'm herring this over and over again, people trouting their mouths off about fish and I always rise to the bait too.

Back to Labour plans, this time to cap the pay of high-earning council staff

Why didn't Labour do this when the were in control in the first place?

Dorian,Edinburgh

Because that's what you do when you're in opposition – make promises you can't keep.

Vandala,

A pay freeze when you earn over 40k is hardly going to hurt the same way the current modernising pay or alternative business models are going to. Staff below 20k are having to lose 15-25% of their wages. Staff between 30 and 40k are losing their jobs and the highest earners get a pay freeze. Only in Edinburgh Council could this happen.
