“Quite simply, keeping people safe. It’s what we all joined for and it’s what we are going to do.

“We want our local communities to be safer, stronger and great places to work in and visit. We will make this happen.

Meanwhile, a provisional budget of £1.06 billion was agreed at the last meeting of the Scottish Police Authority yesterday, along with a required spending reduction of £63.9 million.

Chief Constable Steve House said: “This is the most historic structural change in policing in Scotland in generations.
