Storm Darcy: Man dies after plunging into frozen Scottish curling pond to rescue family dog

The 66-year old was airlifted to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after he and his dog were rescued from the pond on Friday.

The incident at Kinneil House prompted a major emergency services response, including two fire engines, police vans, an ambulance and an air ambulance.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed that both the man and dog were successfully rescued from the freezing water with the help of specialist water rescue resources that included a dinghy.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The man was recovered from the water by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and taken by helimed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he later died.”It confirmed enquiries were on going.

The dog was recovered from the water and left in the care of the SSPCA.
