Here’s what you need to know about it.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky is to address MPs this afternoon. He is pictured in February at a press conference before the start of the Russian invasion following crisis talks with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

What is Zelensky expected to say in his address?

He is expected to use his speech – delivered by video link from Kyiv – to issue a renewed appeal for Western support, including a Nato no-fly zone.

Britain and other allies have ruled that out, warning that it could bring Nato and Russian jets into direct conflict, potentially sparking a wider European war.

He gave an address to the European Parliament last week and imparted a virtual message to the US Senate on Saturday, with the embattled leader expected on Tuesday to renew messages from those speeches to MPs, including pushing for the West to install a no-fly zone over Ukraine and for more arms to be delivered.

What time is he speaking?

The speech will take place at 5pm on Tuesday (8 March),

After the address was announced, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said: “Every parliamentarian wants to hear directly from the president, who will be speaking to us live from Ukraine, so this is an important opportunity for the House.

“Thanks again to our incredible staff for working at pace to make this historic address possible.”

MPs will be able to watch the speech on screens installed overnight above either side of the chamber, House of Commons officials said.

More than 500 headsets will be made available to enable the UK’s elected representatives to hear a simultaneous translation in English.

There will be no questions at the end of the address to Mr Zelensky, who is reportedly at risk of assassination by pro-Russian groups in Kyiv.

On Tuesday Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told the BBC: “I have been very privileged to meet the President of Ukraine on a number of occasions.

“He is young, he is modern, his values are what President Putin hates, and that is why President Putin is so determined to try to snuff out the values of Ukraine.

“Well, we are not going to let that happen.”
