Broughton aim to bowl over Oban

Broughton rugby club face their biggest match since entertaining Boroughmuir in a Scottish Cup tie six years ago when they visit Oban Lorne in the
RBS National Bowl semi-final.

Victory tomorrow would send the Wardie club to Murrayfield for the first time against either Kinross or Grangemouth.

On the occasion of the ’Muir match, Rhys Williams was in the Broughton back row. Today the 38-year-old Aucklander is preparing the team in his
second season as coach.

“We are on a good run of six wins and a draw from seven fixtures in 2013,” said Rhys. “For Broughton to get to Murrayfield would be massive and I have to admit I’d have to suppress the temptation to pick myself for the team!

“First, though, we have to overcome what I’m sure will be a very big Oban pack when we travel north on Saturday morning and I’ll make a point of stressing we can’t allow ourselves to think too far ahead.

“Certainly the season is
ending better than it started when we were hampered by injuries in the front row, and we remain on target to fulfil the target we set at the beginning of the year which was a top-four finish in East Division Three.”

Owing to cancellations, Broughton have been able to fulfil only 12 fixtures this season, with a backlog likely to see them play into May.
