Diligent Steven Davis picks up player award

STEVEN Davis' central role in keeping Rangers out in front in the SPL title race since the turn of the year was recognised yesterday when he was named Clydesdale Bank Player of the Month for January. The Northern Ireland midfielder helped the Ibrox club press home their advantage over Celtic at the top of the table despite being without several key players such as leading scorers Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller.

Davis, already being mooted as a Player of the Year contender, has also enhanced his consistency of performance by breaking his scoring duck for the season with three goals in successive matches recently.

"I have just been trying to get into positions that give me chances to score," he said. "I have worked on it in training as well. You always do shooting practice, but I've stayed behind for an extra ten minutes or so to work on free-kicks. It was nice to see one go in recently during a match."

Davis expects grinding out another result to be the order of the day when Rangers face Motherwell tonight on a Fir Park pitch currently in poor condition. "I've seen it on TV and it doesn't look the best," he added.
