Scottish Football transfer RECAP: Celtic's ex-striker 'completes' Madrid deal, Championship move for young Rangers midfielder

Rangers and Celtic have been linked with making moves – but nothing has come to fruition yet as the Scottish transfer window approaches the half-way stage. Will that change this evening?

Scott Wright is a name on every Rangers supporters’ lips after yesterday’s confirmation that Steven Gerrard was keen on taking the Aberdeen winger to Ibrox. How and when is the topic of discussion and could there be a Greg Stewart-shaped makeweight in an early deal?

We’ll have to wait and see, and Celtic will also play the waiting game over their sell-on clause for Moussa Dembele. The Hoops installed the future payments in the Frenchman’s transfer to Lyon but now that he’s moved to Atletico Madrid, according to sources, there could be money coming to Parkhead… only not just yet.

The former Fulham striker’s move to the Spanish La Liga leaders is on an initial loan until the end of the season. The wait may be worth it though with the fee set in the region of £33m, and Celtic could be due a slice.

Chris Cadden’s protracted move from Columbus Crew in America to Hibs is also still not over the line two weeks after the initial link – but could it be done soon? And Hearts are still to sign the target man Robbie Neilson had an eye on.

Elsewhere away from the wheeling and dealing, a row is brewing from today’s SPFL meeting which included, amongst other topics, the enforced winter break for all football clubs outside the 22 in the top two leagues of the SPFL, with Falkirk calling for ‘urgent change’.

There’s also some on the field action too, this evening, as Aberdeen and Livingston meet in West Lothian.

Celtic can’t recall Hendry

Celtic can’t recall Jack Hendry in the January transfer window despite the centre-back’s sparking form for KV Oostende in the Belgian top flight as there was no option to do so in the deal that sent him on loan.

Oostende wish to sign the 25-year-old permanently but face competition from England and clubs in other top leagues across Europe. (Daily Record)

Wright to Rangers latest

Derek McInnes says he’ll continue to play Scott Wright even if the attacker signs a pre-contract with Rangers.

Oxford United are also interested in the 23-year-old, but Rangers lead the chase as they’re the only club to express an interest in signing the player this window. (Daily Record)

Benkovic sub queried

Former Celtic hero Frank McAvennie believes it’s strange that Filip Benkovic rejected the chance to return to his old club in favour of a loan deal with Belgian side OH Leuven.

Benkovic previously impressed on loan at the reigning Scottish champions and McAvennie feels “something must have happened” for the defender to turn down Celtic and play on the continent instead.

Celtic battle Leeds for McGurk

Celtic have joined the fight with Leeds United to land 17-year-old Sean McGurk.

The Wigan Athletic youngster is being tracked by a host of big clubs who see real potential in the attacking midfielder.

Former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele has finalised his deal with Atletico Madrid this afternoon, according to Get France Football News.

The deal will be until the end of the season on loan, but the Hoops will be keen to hear of any potential future move with add-ons installed in his transfer to Lyon from Celtic Park.

Rangers youth Ben Williamson has moved to Arbroath on loan for the remainder of the season.

While one Dembele is on the move, another isn’t….

Siriki Dembele, older brother of Celtic prodigy Karamoko, isn’t leaving Peterborough in this transfer window according to Posh director of football Barry Fry.

Rangers have been foiled if they were planning on watching target Scott Wright tonight in action against Livingston.

The Aberdeen game at West Lothian has suffered a late call-off - the second in as many weeks at the Tony Macaroni Arena - this time due to a deluge of rain on the synthetic surface.

Derek McInnes confirmed the Ibrox interest in the winger during yesterday’s pre-match press conference - here.

And had his say again tonight in Livingston

That’s all from us this evening but we’ll be back in the morning with the Rumour Mill and another live blog to take you through the latest Scottish football news from across the country.
