Dunfermline: Gerry McCabe latest to be axed

Another redundancy was announced yesterday by the interim administrators in place at Dunfermline to add to the seven players released on Thursday. Although manager Jim Jefferies has agreed to stay on at the club for just expenses, Gerry McCabe, his assistant, has left as the cost-cutting continues.

John Potter and Craig Dargo, who are on player-coach contracts at Dunfermline, will remain at East End Park for the time being, with the squad for today’s First Division fixture against Livingston set to contain a majority of players aged between 18 and 22. Seven senior professionals were made redundant earlier in the week.

Three of those have already found new clubs. Promotion-chasing Partick Thistle have signed Jordan McMillan and defender Andy Dowie. Goalkeeper Paul Gallacher is believed to be on the verge of joining Ross County.

Gallacher said that “animals had been treated better” than the players. “It is disgusting,” he said. “The gaffer was handed a piece of paper and had to read the names out. Your heart sinks.”

Interim administrator Bryan Jackson, of accountants PKF, yesterday said he was “sticking with” his claim that it was the worst situation he had encountered at a football club. “There is no fat anywhere,” he said. “No player to sell, no property to sell.”

He met with majority shareholder Gavin Masterton for the first time yesterday.
