Jimmy Greaves: Harry Kane, Gary Linkeker and more pay tribute to England and Tottenham legend

The football community is in mourning today after the news of Jimmy Greaves death at the age of 81.

Tributes have flooded social media as English football pay their respects to the 1966 World Cup winner and Tottenham Hotspur record goalscorer who was also remembered for staring in ITV’s football show Saint and Greavsie.

Greaves suffered a stroke in 2015 an sadly passed away on September 19, 2021.

Current Spurs and England captain Harry Kane led the tributes, sharing a touching message and photograph.

Kane wrote: “RIP Jimmy Greaves. A true legend and one of the great goalscorers. Thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Another former Spurs and England striker, and current Match of the Day presenter Gary Linkeker also posted, praising Greaves as both a footballer and a person.

He wrote: “Terribly sad news that Jimmy Greaves has died. Quite possibly the greatest striker this country has ever produced. A truly magnificent footballer who was at home both in the box and on the box. A charismatic, knowledgeable, witty and warm man. A giant of the sport. #ripGreavsie

Lineker followed up with a second tweet which said: “Seems fitting on the day we lose Jimmy Greaves that Tottenham are playing Chelsea. The two clubs where he spent the majority of his spectacular career. It’sure to a poignant afternoon in north east London.”

Stan Collymore, another former England striker, described Greaves as “one of the greatest strikers of all time.”

He wrote: “One of the greatest strikers of all time who crossed seemlessly into broadcasting where he became a beloved national treasure. Sending much love to Jimmy’s family and friends, I know Spurs and Chelsea will do him proud today. Rest in peace Greavsie. Legend of legends.”

Michael Owen, who came within touching distance of Greaves’ 44 England goals tally, scoring 40 of his own for the Three Lions, remembers his father describing Greaves playing style to him.

He said: “Sad to hear that the Great Jimmy Greaves passed away earlier today. He was a generation before my time but my dad always said he was the best finisher in the game. Rest In Peace Jimmy.”

Tottenham Hostpur have sent out a number of messages and memories of Greaves, but perhaps the most poignant came when they posts a picture of their record goalscorer lifting the European Cup Winners Cup.

The accompanying words simply said: “The greatest ever.”
