Scottish Football LIVE: Celtic, Rangers, Hibs, Hearts & more!
Frank McAvennie on Celtic’s left-back situation
Speaking to Football Insider, Frank McAvennie claimed Greg Taylor needs competition at left-back as Leeds United’s Barry Douglas holds reported talks with Celtic over a move.
“Celtic like to play free and open football but sometimes I see him by Edouard and I think, ‘Really?’ I like free flowing football as a centre-forward but I never played with defenders who came past the strikers.
“Sometimes you have got to hold, I know he has energy and wants a goal but first and foremost you are a defender. Take a leaf out of Kieran Tierney’s book.
“Taylor is still young but he does not have anyone to push him. Barry Douglas would give him competition. That is what it is all about, getting pushed.
“When Patrick Roberts came in, my god, all of a sudden Forrest was one of the best players on the park. Psychologically when somebody comes in you get a wee kick up the backside and maybe he needs that to step up a gear.”
Shane Duffy’s transfer price ‘revealed’ - according to reports
Celtic are already planning to sign Shane Duffy permanently once his year-long loan stint in Glasgow ends, according to the Daily Record.
They state that Brighton, however, are looking for as much as £10m for Duffy’s signature.
Alan Hutton has his say on Rangers’ Lewis Mayo
Speaking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton has urged young defender Lewis Mayo to seal a loan move after he signed a new long-term contract at Rangers.
“Obviously Gerrard speaks very highly of him, that’s he’s definitely one for the future and that they expect him to be in and about the squad.
“I think now, he’s signed the contract, let him go out on loan. He had a successful loan at Partick Thistle last season and then now it’s about topping that up, maybe going to an even higher level, maybe another Premiership team and playing that 30-game season.
“Really kind of bedding yourself into the Scottish League and then after that, he’ll obviously be looking to challenge the first-team players because he’s got a good standard in front of him.
“Obviously Goldson’s the number one, you’ve got Balogun, Helander and Edmundson fighting it out for that other position so it’s going to be tough for him.
“When the manager has that high praise for you, he’s obviously got something, so it’s just about him concentrating on his football now and playing games.”
